Other Ways to Give

Donor Advised Funds

A fast-growing tool for charitable giving is through Donor Advised funds, or DAFs.

To learn more about DAFs and how they work, follow this link. If you are interested in setting up a locally based DAF, please contact Community Foundations of The Hudson Valley.

IRA Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs)

For individuals who are 70½ or older, making charitable gifts from your IRA, instead of from your bank account, can be a tax-wise decision. Why? When you give from your IRA directly to a qualified charitable organization like TapRoot, it is not taxed as income. If you are 73 or older, your charitable gifts count towards your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD). IRA QCDs can be up to $108,000 per person, per year.

Giving Appreciated Securities

Why is giving appreciated securities (stocks or mutual funds) a tax-wise strategy?  If you itemize on your taxes, the value of your gift of appreciated securities is the fair market value when you give it. If instead, you sold those securities and gave the proceeds, you would have to pay capital gains tax on the appreciation.

Employer Matching Gifts

Many larger companies will match all or part of your gifts to charity.  If your employer has a matching gift program, be sure to provide or submit any required forms when you make your gift.
